The unit explores democratic values, the intricate process of political inquiry, and their profound impact on fostering civic action. Students will delve into civic issues to develop a comprehensive understanding of the beliefs and values associated with democratic citizenship in Canada and articulate their positions on these issues based on rigorous research, critical analysis, and thoughtful reflection. 

Students participate in the political inquiry process, uncovering different perspectives, evaluating evidence, and making informed decisions. The unit, by emphasizing the connection between democratic values, civic action, and one’s role as an active citizen, equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate complex civic issues and contribute meaningfully to the democratic fabric of their communities. 

The unit focuses on empowering students to become active and responsible citizens, capable of initiating positive change in their communities. Students explore the fundamental principles and values of democratic citizenship through interactive activities, discussions, and real-world projects, and develop a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between civic engagement and societal transformation. 

Students will examine historical and contemporary examples of individuals and groups who contributed significantly to social and political change to cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of agency. Students develop the skills to identify and analyze social issues, collaborate with others, and formulate and implement effective strategies for creating meaningful and sustainable impact. The unit ignites a passion for engaged citizenship and equips students with the tools to actively participate in shaping a more just and inclusive society.Â
