ENG4U course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and
creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will
analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures;
interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media
texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently
and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular
purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended
to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace.
Prerequisite: English Grade 11 (University Preparation)
In this unit, students will be introduced to the major terms and concepts that will build a foundation for this course. Students will be examining a variety of short stories and non-fiction pieces using a variety of mediums and media styles.
In this unit, students will review and expand upon their knowledge of argumentative essay writing techniques. They will learn to, and improve upon, their capability to use evidence from texts to support their writing and how to incorporate the evidence into their essays.Â
In this unit, students will be introduced to the novel form, discuss how fiction can be used to create awareness of and analyze real-world issues, and use knowledge of literary devices to explore the novel and write argumentative essays using evidence from the text.
In this unit, students will review a variety of texts to learn about media studies, specifically differentiate between overt and implicit messages, understand the purpose of advertising, and comprehend ideology.Â
