The unit will focus on basic French conversations and descriptions and cover verb conjugation (avoir, etre, faire, aller), gendered nouns, and reading comprehension. Students will practice introducing themselves, asking questions about personal information, discussing hobbies, and describing physical and personality traits. The unit will develop speaking, writing, reading, and listening in French, allowing students to engage in simple conversations and understand written texts.
The unit focuses on adjectives, adverbs, linking words, and verb conjugation in French and covers the concept of linking words and their role in connecting ideas and sentences, focusing on using appropriate linking words to express relationships and create cohesive paragraphs or conversations. Students will learn the rules of agreement of adjectives with nouns in terms of gender and number and practice using adjectives and adverbs to describe people, objects, actions, and situations accurately. Additionally, students will study verb conjugation for RE, IR, and ER verbs, including irregular verbs, learn how the endings change in different tenses, and develop their understanding and usage of these linguistic elements, allowing them to construct grammatically correct sentences, descriptions, and written or spoken discourse.
The unit will introduce students to the conjugation and usage of different verb tenses in French, including the Futur Simple, Imparfait, Passe Compose, and Present Tense, and cover regular and irregular verb conjugations in these tenses for all subject pronouns. Students will learn each tense’s key characteristics, formation rules, and purpose. They will develop the skills to formulate grammatically correct sentences, narratives, and questions using the appropriate verb tenses and enhance their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through practice and application of the tenses in various contexts.Â
The unit also incorporates vocabulary related to daily routines and activities and uses question words to ask and answer relevant questions. By the end of the unit, students will have a solid understanding of verb tenses and their usage, which will help them communicate effectively in French.Â
The unit will develop French Language skills in students in various areas, including restaurant vocabulary, colors, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, and weather expressions. Students will learn to recognize and identify common restaurant terms, understand restaurant dialogues, and confidently engage in conversations, ordering food and drinks and making requests.Â
Students will also learn colors, their gender, and agreement rules and practice using them to describe objects and surroundings and master numbers from 0 to 100, days of the week, months of the year, and weather expressions to communicate about dates, schedules, and weather conditions. The unit will help students to expand their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and apply their language skills in meaningful contexts.
The unit will explore the connections between French and English, both linguistically and historically. Students will understand the reasons behind the similarities in vocabulary and recognize cognates, loanwords, and shared words between the two languages. They will learn about the historical context of French communities in Canada, including the establishment of New France and the impact of colonization, identify key French-speaking regions in Canada, such as Quebec and Acadia, and gain insights into these communities’ customs, traditions, and cultural practices. Students will also appreciate the linguistic diversity within French communities, including regional dialects, and develop an understanding of manners, such as using the verb “vouloir” and speaking respectfully, enhancing their knowledge of language connections and cultural diversity, fostering a deeper appreciation for the contributions of French communities in Canada.Â
