Become an Active Citizen

In this course, you’ll learn what it means to be an engaged citizen in a democratic society. You’ll explore current issues that affect your community and the world, and how social media influences these issues.

You’ll develop a deeper understanding of how political processes work at the local, national, and global levels, and how you can make a difference.

Throughout the course, you’ll:

  • Develop critical thinking and digital literacy skills
  • Learn about the mechanisms of government and Indigenous governance systems
  • Understand the history behind the rights and freedoms we enjoy in Canada
  • Analyze how government policies impact individuals and the economy
  • Discover ways to serve your community and make a positive impact

By the end of this course, you’ll have a clear plan for your future and the skills you need to achieve your goals.

The unit focuses on empowering students to become active and responsible citizens, capable of initiating positive change in their communities. Students explore the fundamental principles and values of democratic citizenship through interactive activities, discussions, and real-world projects, and develop a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between civic engagement and societal transformation.

Students will examine historical and contemporary examples of individuals and groups who contributed significantly to social and political change to cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of agency. Students develop the skills to identify and analyze social issues, collaborate with others, and formulate and implement effective strategies for creating meaningful and sustainable impact. The unit ignites a passion for engaged citizenship and equips students with the tools to actively participate in shaping a more just and inclusive society.
