At Sunray Academy of Canada, we understand education creates opportunity and these opportunities extend beyond any individual student—they extend to families, communities, and even future generations. This belief was powerfully reflected on June 16, 2026 as Dr. Ray Gupta, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Sunray Group, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) by York University in Canada during its Spring Convocation for the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.
Dr. Ray Gupta is the co-founder of Sunray Academy of Canada, alongside Sonia Gupta, the Academy’s Director and Head Principal. Together, Dr. Ray Gupta’s interest in education as a tool to foster opportunity, and Sonia’s decades of experience across secondary and postsecondary education, led them to create a high school experience that balanced academic excellence with wellbeing and character development, while creating a personalized pathway toward individual excellence. With this model, learners are supported in designing their future and pursuing global opportunities, rooted in the values of leadership, community, and integrity.
“At Sunray Group, we believe in building communities. Education is the foundation of these opportunities. And by investing into education, we help support the next generation of young people,” says Dr. Ray Gupta.
Dr. Ray Gupta’s honorary doctorate reflects lifelong contributions to Canadian business, education, health care, philanthropy, and community leadership. More importantly, it celebrates a philosophy that has shaped both Sunray Group and Sunray Academy of Canada: Creating opportunities for others through purposeful leadership and investment. Dr. Gupta’s journey—from arriving in Canada as an immigrant to building one of the country’s largest privately owned hotel companies—is rooted in resilience, humility, integrity and an unwavering commitment to giving back.
Those same values continue to inspire Sunray Academy of Canada’s mission to illuminate the path from potential to purpose for learners around the world. These beliefs shine through every aspect of the Sunray Academy of Canada experience. Through personalized Ontario education, flexible pathways, and meaningful student support, learners are empowered to discover their strengths, pursue global opportunities and confidently shape futures that are uniquely their own.
During his convocation address, Dr. Gupta shared lessons drawn from a lifetime of leadership, encouraging graduates to embrace uncertainty with courage and perseverance. He reminded graduates that growth often begins before confidence arrives, and that you should never wait to accept an opportunity—or to create opportunities for yourself. These messages resonate deeply with Sunray Academy of Canada’s educational philosophy. Every student’s pathway is different, but every learner deserves the confidence, guidance and opportunities to take chances and to reach their potential. Through our core Educational Approach: Illuminating the Path from Potential to Purpose, we allow our educational philosophy to shine across three pillars—Leadership in Learning, Connected Learning Culture, and Illuminated Purpose. Through these pillars, students are supported academically and personally as they build the knowledge, character and global perspective needed to thrive in an evolving world.
Dr. Gupta also reflected on the true meaning of leadership, noting: “True leadership is never about authority; it is entirely about people.” His emphasis on relationship building deeply ties into community building and future outcomes. At Sunray Academy of Canada, this philosophy comes to life through meaningful relationships between students, educators, and mentors. Learning extends beyond academic achievement to foster belonging, collaboration, and the confidence to make a positive impact within local and global communities.
In closing his address, Dr. Gupta challenged graduates to lead with integrity, compassion and ambition. He says, “Our world desperately needs thoughtful leaders and compassionate builders, who are willing to create opportunities, not only for themselves, but for others.” His words serve as a powerful reminder of what education can achieve when it is grounded in purpose.
Sunray Academy of Canada proudly congratulates Dr. Ray Gupta on this remarkable recognition. His honorary doctorate from York University honours a lifetime of leadership and service while reinforcing the values that continue to guide Sunray Academy of Canada: That potential is universal, pathways are personal, and education has the power to illuminate a future filled with possibility, purpose and lasting impact.
